I was at a breakfast meeting once, and this ex-special forces guy gave a presentation on applying hardcore tactics to everyday business.
One thing that really stuck in my mind – and immediately changed how I approached my trading – was the way they stay laser-focused on their missions…
When the commanding officer is briefing them on the mission he focuses on making the main objective clear. Whenever he does mention that main objective he pauses. And then he repeats it again a second time.
It might sound something like this:
‘At 02:00 hours Alpha team will approach from the west and provide cover. Delta team, you’ll sneak in from the South and lay the explosives. Our objective is to knock out the communications mast [Pause] OUR OBJECTIVE IS TO KNOCK OUT THE COMMUNICATIONS MAST.’
Now it might seem a bit odd to hear certain sentences repeated whenever spoken. But it gives absolute clarity about the mission.
It means if enemy soldiers suddenly popped out of a building half dressed, fired off a few rounds, and went running for their lives into the desert, the Special Forces troops would know not give chase. That’s not the mission. It’s not what they’re there to do. Their mission is to knock out the communications mast. Simple.
Makes sense right? You can see how it’d raise the probability of you getting the result you actually need. And stop you running around like a headless chicken reacting to all the wrong things.
And that’s why I think it’s absolutely critical to have a pre-defined battle plan when it comes to trading.
A great way to reduce stress
Pre-plan your trading session in a similar way to the Special Forces and it’ll give clarity. It’ll reduce stress. And most importantly of all, it’ll get results.
